Expectations:
I hope to learn something relevant to the world in which I teach.
Starting point:
I teach English to young Emirati women. I signed up for the course because it comes from Finland.
Background:
26 years teaching in a variety of countries. I'm a Brit but have only taught there for 3 years.
Subject matter expertise:
Comes by default but I also have teaching qualifications.
Online learning experience:
I did a short course with Harvard School of Education a couple of years ago. Frustrating! Studying online in collaborative groups seemed inefficient and time consuming. In real life my team use email to exchange information but meet face to face to express opinion and decide on direction. I am interested to see how this works out with slightly more sophisticated tools.
My work:
I teach young women in a traditional, conservative Arab culture within a system and a society that is experiencing radical change. Despite 14 years teaching in the Middle East I find my training and experience increasing inadequate in dealing with a student body I used to feel I knew well.
I hope to offer teaching and cultural experience to the team and in return I am looking forward to benefitting from your insight and intelligence. In return I resolve to remain as open minded and flexible as my disposition permits.
